Released across 80 screens on 30 October 2009, Dead Man Running took a respectable £513,120 at the UK box office. In its first week on DVD it shifted a whopping 45,702 units, bolstered by a nationwide signing tour for Dyer. To date, lifetime DVD sales in the UK have topped 235,000.

After the film performed so strongly on DVD, little time was wasted in announcing a sequel. Taking its cue from the first film’s best gag, the sequel was tipped to be set in Dubai and budgets of £10 million were bandied about Soho. According to Entertainment site Digital Spy, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole (then married to Dead Man Running exec Ashley Cole) was in line to play the female lead in a proposed sequel: “Cheryl Cole will allegedly be offered a six-figure pay cheque to star in the sequel to crime thriller Dead Man Running. According to a spokesman for Revolver Entertainment, the firm behind the project, plans are afoot to recruit the pop star for the follow-up. “There is a character Cheryl is perfect for and we are holding meetings over the next few weeks to discuss exactly what we can offer her, it will be a sizeable sum,” the spokesman said. Dead Man Running starred 50 Cent, Danny Dyer and Brenda Blethyn and was produced by Cole’s estranged husband Ashley and his England teammate Rio Ferdinand. It is unclear if Cole or Ferdinand will be back for Dead Man Running 2.”

I don’t like the physical, hands-on side of production, but I do enjoy raising money, I do enjoy being the glue, I do enjoy putting the line producer with the producer and then getting the director on board and helping the cast out – the whole process of film-making, I love it. But the actual hands-on side of it – not for me, I’d rather be in front of the camera.”

As late as December 2010, Hassan still nursed ambitions to make a sequel, but sounded a note of caution about flooding the market, as he explained to BeyondHollywood.com: “Well we’ve got Dead Man Running 2 coming up and there’s also talk of The Business 2. We’ve just been offered a few comedies here and there – you know, people writing stuff for us. But what we don’t wanna do is saturate the market with Danny and Tamer movies! I think if we do one every two or three years people will enjoy them more, so we’ve got to be careful of that.”

It’s easy to dismiss Dead Man Running simply because it isn’t The Business, but then it never set out to be. But as ticking clock London caper movies go, it’s up there with the best of them and is a major return to fan-pleasing form for both of its stars. There is no doubt that Tamer Hassan knew exactly
